Massive Rare Earth Deposits Found In Rajasthan !!

What are Rare Earth Elements (REEs)?

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemically similar metals vital for modern technology:

  • Light REEs: Lanthanum (la), Cerium (Ce), Neodymium (Nd), Praseodymium (Pr), Samarium (Sm)
  • Heavy REEs: Dysprosium (Dy), Terbium (Tb), Yttrium (), etc.
  • These are critical for high-tech manufacturing, including
  • Electric motors in EVs (Neodymium, Dysprosium)
  • Wind turbines
  • Smartphones and electronics
  • Missile guidance systems, radars, and satellites

India currently imports 100% of its REE requirements, mostly from China, which dominates global production with over 60% market share.

Rajasthan Discovery: What Has Been Found?

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) have discovered critical mineral-rich blocks in:

  • Balotra (Barmer district)
  • Jalore (Jalore district)
    Both in western Rajasthan.

These regions show significant concentrations of REE-bearing minerals, specifically:

  • Bastnäsite
  • Britholite
  • Xenotime

These minerals contain valuable REEs such as:

  • Neodymium (Nd)
  • Dysprosium (Dy)
  • Cerium (Ce)
  • Lanthanum (La)
  • Praseodymium (Pr)
According to a US Geological Survey (USGS) estimate:
India holds the third-largest REE reserves in the world, but it remains vastly underexplored and underutilized.

What’s Being Auctioned?

The Ministry of Mines, under the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) and National Criticani.rals (Mision (NCMIM), ispreparing to auction 17 mineral block, including:

  • REEs
  • Potash
  • Graphite
  • Vanadium
  • Lithium (some blocks from other states)

Timeline

  • The auction of these blocks is expected by late 2025.
  • These will be under Composite Licences: One permit allows exploration + mining + production -simplifies investor entry.

Previous Success

In earlier auction rounds:

  • 10 out of 15 blocks were successfully awarded
  • Winners included:
  •  Coal India Ltd (CIL)
  • Hindustan Zinc
  • Oil India
  • NLC India

Rajasthan already auctioned:

  • Potash-Halite Block (Hanumangarh) – Awarded to Oil India
  • Another Potash block – Awarded to Hindustan Zinc

Why This Is Strategically Important

Decoupling from China

  • China monopolizes the global REE supply chain,
  • India, US, EU are trying to diversify sourcing to avoid strategic dependency.

Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat

  • Domestic REE mining will fuel:
  • EV industry
  • Renewable energy equipment
  • Defence systems
  • Electronics and chips

 PLI Scheme for REE Magnets

  • र1, 000 crore Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) for making:
  • Permanent magnets
  • High-end alloys
  • Battery components

Geopolitical Leverage

  • Access to rare earths enhances India’s voice in global trade, green transition, and military supply
    chains.

Tech-Enabled Exploration

Rajasthan is now using-

  • Al and machine learning to scan for mineral prospects.
  • Satellite imagery, geophysical sensors, and drones to pinpoint deposits.
  • This tech-driven exploration cuts costs, time, and risks,

Challenges Ahead

Despite the opportunity, India faces:

  • Processing technology gap: Rare earth extraction and separation is complex and polluting
  • Environmental regulations: Need to balance mining with sustainability
  • Private sector incentives: Need to offer attractive terms for risk-heavy exploration
  • Local opposition risks: Mining projects can trigger land & tribal protests

 Conclusion

India’s discovery of rare earth-rich minerals in Rajasthan marks a turning point in the country’s resource
security and clean tech future. f handled properly, this could:

  • Slash import dependence
  • Strengthen national security
  • Catalyze green manufacturing
  • Turn India into a rare earth exporter in 10-15 years

But the success hinges on:

  • Timely auctions
  • Smooth clearances
  • Strong public-private partnerships
  • Environmental balance
