Tesla Enters Indian Market Will It Succeed ?
Tesla is finally in India with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai. Located in heart of the city t Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the 4, 000-square-foot space marks the beginning of the electric vehicle giant’s long-awaited entry into the Indian market.
This flagship showroom, also referred to as a Tesla Experience Centre, is expected to be followed by more outlets in major metros, including New Delhi. The move comes as Tesla looks to explore new growth markets amid slowing demand in its established territories.
Where ls The Store And What’s Inside?
Tesla’s Mumbai showroom is located at BKC, one of the city’s most upscale commercial districts. The rent for the showroom, reportedly, is RS 35 lakh per month. Exclusive photographs obtained by NDTV show the storefront fully branded with the Tesla logo, and a white Tesla vehicle, partially covered, inside the showroom.
This will be Tesla’s inaugural experience centre in India, serving as the American EV maker’s first physical presence in the country, While the Elon Musk company has not yet confirmed plans for a manufacturing plant or assembly facility in India, the showroom launch is seen as a strategic move to gauge consumer interest and market potential.
The showroom is currently showcasing the Model Y, Tesla’s all-electric SUV. Six Model Y SUVs have been imported from Shanghai to Mumbai for the opening, Images shared on social media show the final pre-launch touches being applied, including the vehicle being transported into the store through a flatbed truck.
Tesla Model Y (RWD) Price in india
- Price: 59.89 lakh (base) – र67.89lakh (long-rangel) ex-showroom; on-road ~61-69lakh
- Battery/Ranges:
- 60kWh -500km (WLTP)
- 75kWh -622km
- Performance:
- 295hp, 420Nm torque
- 0-100km/h in 5.6s; top speed ~201km/h
- The Tesla Model Y is a mid-size electric SUV, based on the same platform as the Tesla Model 3.it is known for:
- Long electric range (up to 531 km WLTP)
- High performance (0-100 km/h in ~3.5-5 seconds),
- Autopilot and Full-Self Driving options,
- Advanced battery tech and safety features.
- It is one of the best-selling EVs worldwide—but in India, it is priced extremely high compared to other countries.
No Local Manufacturing or Assembly in India
Tesla does not yet manufacture or assemble the Model Y in India. Because of this;
- It cannot benefit rom reduced duties for SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) or CKD (Completely Knocked
Down) units - Tesla does not qualify for local incentives like the FAME-ll subsidy or state EV policies (which require
local production)
Contrast with China
- Tesla set up a Gigafactory in Shanghai, and local production eliminated import tariffs in China.
- Chinese government gave tax incentives, fast approvals, and land subsidies to Tesla.
No Favorable Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US
- India does not have a Free Trade Agreement with the US, which means:
- Full customs duties apply to all US-made goods, including Tesla cars.
- Other countries with FTAs (e.g, Mexico under USMCA, EU, GCC) can import at lower cost.
- Tesla exports Model Y from the us and China, and India taxes both routes heavily.
Adaptation to Indian Regulations and Roads
- Tesla must customize its vehicles to meet Indian conditions and rules:
- Right-Hand Drive (RHD) version,
- Compliance with CMVR (Central Motor Vehicles Rules)
- Adherence to AIS-038 and BIS standards for batteries, braking systems, etc.
- This costs time and money in homologation (certification), and Tesla has to absorb these costs for a relatively small market.
Lack of Infrastructure and Market Penetration
- India currently lacks a robust EV charging network, especially for Tesla’s proprietary Superchargers:
- Tesla would need to build or partner with Indian firms to set up fast charging infrastructure.
- Low sales volumes mean the cost of this is currently not justified.
- Because of this, Tesla might price higher to limit initial demand while maintaining a premium image.
What Could Make It Cheaper in India?
India-Tesla Deal (Under Negotiation):
- India is offering reduced duties for 2, 500 vehicles/year if Tesla commits to build a factory .
- Tesla is scouting for land in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu for a Gigafactory.
Local Production Would:
- Bring Model Y price down to र40-50 lakh,
- Qualify for FAME-ll and State EV subsidies
- Create jobs and ecosystem for EVs in India.
Challenges & Risks
1. High Pricing Due to Imports
- Tesla’s current 60-70 lakh pricing puts it in the luxury import segment, alongside BMW iX1, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and Mercedes EQB.
- Indian EVs (Tata, Mahindra) offer sinmilar range and tech for half the price.
- Until local manufacturing starts, Tesla may struggle with volume.
2.Underdeveloped Charging Infrastructure
- Outside top metros, India lacks reliable fast-charging stations.
- Tesla’s model depends heavily on destination charging and home setups-challenging in Indian apartments.
3. Lack of Affordable Models
- Indian EV market is mostly sub-25 lakh. Tesla’s cheapest model is still 60+ lakh.
- Without a smaller, “Tesla Model 2″(20-25 lakh), it won’t gain mass-market traction.
4. Indian Competition Growing Fast
- Tata, Mahindra, and MG are launching stylish, high-range EVs with ADAS and fast charging at lower prices.
- Indian EVs like Tata Harrier.ev, Mahindra XUV.e9 offer 600+ km range for र25-30 lakh, undermining Tesla’s edge.
- Ola Electric is also entering the electric SUV segment in 2025
5. Taxation & Bureaucracy
- Despite recent incentives, GST on EVs is 5%, but CBUs still attract 70-100% import duties.
- Homologation rules, service support networks, and local compliance may slow Tesla’s rollout.
Final Verdict: Buyer, Beware
Tesla’s arrival in India may create short-term buzz, but unless it adapts to Indian road realities, competitive pricing, and customer support, the brand risks being outclassed by smarter, faster-moving rivals from China and
elsewhere. Rather than being the torchbearer of an EV revolution, Tesla might end up as a luxury novelty-all style, little substance.
